Mission Statement
Our principal aim is to comprehensively educate graduate students and post-doctoral associates in the biological sciences about the practical aspects of bioscience business development and application. The majority of graduate doctoral programs prepare students exclusively for careers in academia with little or no focus on the understanding of concepts necessary to bioscience commercialization. We believe that this lack of focus is a substantial educational oversight in light of the current trends of increasing academic-industry collaborations, and institutional intellectual property revenue. Furthermore given steadily rising competition for academic positions, we feel that graduate students in the biological sciences can benefit enormously from an understanding and exposure to the wide array of alternative career paths aside from that of an academic principal investigator.
We aim to advance the understanding of the above concepts in our organization through a collective and participatory threefold method;
- Fundamentals – Student led case studies and tutorials on basic aspects of business, finance, therapeutic and device development, FDA and EMEA regulation, intellectual property, and technology transfer.
- Biobusiness Analysis - In-depth analyses of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical companies, focusing on the feasibility and potential of their underlying science. This will include Final Recommendations as to how we believe the companies will perform, based on the findings of the scientific analysis and a complete business evaluation (market potential, competitive landscape, development risk, intellectual property position, and general business & financial issues). Experienced members of the association present their analyses on a rotating schedule and newer members are strongly encouraged to build their personal portfolio with similar reports and publications.
- Speakers –The NYU Biotechnology Association hosts a series of speaker seminars highlighting professionals from different aspects of the bioscience industry.
Through this approach, we endeavor to create a collective organization in which participating members not only gain knowledge of different aspects of biobusiness development, but also obtain invaluable hands-on and face to face experience of these potential career avenues.
